My Relationship to God
I belong to a number of social groups (most of them are Catholic) and at a meeting tonight for one of those groups I ended up talking to a friend about my relationship to God and it’s something worth talking about here. We all relate to God differently and there is no right or wrong way to do so. No one way is better or more superior than any other, they are just different and are really in accordance with our gifts and talents and the way I relate to God is through Devotion.
I am not an intellectual or a catechist and I am not the most traditional Catholic you will ever meet. The interest and capacity for understanding such things is there; however, my relationship to God is just more prosaic. Devotion is the highest form of love. It is total commitment and, because love is an action word, this means that Devotion is the total commitment to the application of God’s Divine Will and living in accordance with his virtue. It is by living out the virtues that I found freedom from scrupulosity and despair and I can’t recommend it enough. Who wants to live with hate, or anger, or fear, or shame in their heart? There is just so much freedom and joy in living in accordance with God’s Will.
In order to feel God’s love, his mercy, his forgiveness you have to be willing to share them with others first. You have to choose to make them a part of your life in order for them to become real to you. The virtues are not vague concepts to simply be meditated on. They are to be practiced and experienced. They are to be incorporated into your being. They are to be known.
